Hello all, I'd be grateful for any information on this badge please? A friend purchased it recently as a gift for a relative but knows nothing about it!
Thanks in anticipation,
Mivvi

The British 5th Regiment of Foot had George and the Dragon as its symbol and the star plate looks like an early 19th century British shako plate, particularly with that crown. However, the shako plates for this unit that I know about also displayed the regimental motto, battle honours and the numeral ‘V’. A bit of a mystery!

Think I've found it. Kipling and King, the 'bible' of British head-dress collectors says " 1st Middlesex (Victoria) Rifle Volunteer Corps...Officer's shako plate 1859. A bronze eight-pointed star. On this in silver St George killing the Dragon within a laurel-wreath surmounted by a Victorian crown.(Fig 1521)" The illustration shows exactly the plate shown in Mivvi's photo.

I would be very happy to get a gift like this!
