Amazing stuff!

I have known for quite a few years that the pickelhaube is still alive and well in Chile and other South American countries. Nice goose stepping demonstration as well!! I wonder, do our German friends still goose step on parade?? Anyone know the history of this form of marching?? Brian

Hi.
Here's a site that tells about it:

Thanks for posting that! I love the pageantry. Maintaining those white pants has to be tough. Really nice to see thank you.

Not any more (saves estimated 2,000,000 muscle aches per year) but the East German army actually used it until the very last.

Yes , I remember video of those Vopo guards doing the "step" throughout the cold war. Odd that the Russians would have allowed such a blatant symbol of German militarism to be practiced. Brian
PS, I just read the link and was reminded that the Soviets did the "step " as well. A tribal method of threatening ones potential enemies.

But they're speaking Spanish?? :p

Yes, because the parade shown in the video clip takes place in Chile. The old imperial Prussian traditions are alive and well in the Chilean Army: specifically the Military Academy. This includes the pickelhaube, the dark blue tunics, the white trousers, the gorget for the flag bearer, the swallows nest for the band, Prussian march tunes, the schellenbaum, and of course the famous Paradeschritt (derisively called the Goosestep by the Brits).

Now that the East German NVA is no more, Chile is the only place that I know of where you can still see the parade traditions of the Kaiser's army come to life. Just like being able to see the famous annual parade on the Tempelhof parade field.

I dunno, Mark, there's just something wrong about those French-looking uniforms and marching with a goosestep!!! 8-[
