It's also the 110th Anniversary of the 1st Day of the 1916 Somme Offensive.
The day that the Newfoundland Regiment was almost wiped out. This medal group is one of the gems of my collection. A medal group to Pte. Frederick Wilcox #707 who was one of the Newfoundlanders Killed in Action that day. Nearly 800 men went "Over the Top" that morning. The next morning only 3 officers and 76 enlisted ranks answered the roll call.
After that the Newfoundland Regiment was awarded the honourific title The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Memorial Day in Newfoundland is observed on July 1st in addition to Canada Day.
