Chin strap question

I have been wondering about this PB helmet's chinstrap (click me).

It appears to be complete and evidently has the thick mounting lugs (3mm). Was such a chinstrap with buckle used with any intention or is it simply an ersatz oddity?

I dont't thnk that I will bid on the helmet because the parts have such a dull silver appearance as if they were sprayed some time. This is partucularly evident on the spike base which should show some wear from the on-and-off of the spike. But please correct me about this as well.

I think the chin strap is off an earlyer helmet, I do not think that it should be on an M1915, as for the silver colour, it is the same as the paint on a helmet I picked up at SOS a couple of years ago, I thought it was odd too, but Brian looked at it and told me that it was correct, and that it was just a different shade of grey (it does look very silver, and the seller thought it was a special parade helmet)

I just saw a similar strap in Joes article (click me). It is mentioned there that officers used leather straps in the field - was this actually a special type intended for officer helmets? Should'nt there be more of these around then?

Considering the grey/silver color, I always thought that the M15 was not painted at all. To my knowledge the metal parts were treated in a chemical process. But most likeley there is no rule to that either.

Gustaf, do you have a picture of your helmet? Was this finish perhaps an attempt to imitate the pre-M15 silver fittings of the pioneer helmets?

All the M1915 Hauben I have handled had painted fixtures, here are a few shots of my helmet, I am sorry for the poor quality, my rgular computer is on the fritz and I had to grab some new shots, and I do not have a program to crop and inhance photos on my laptop.

notice the same grey discolouration to the leather that you can see on the Haube offered on ebay. I think it is a nice helmet with the wrong chin strap, and would expect it to bring a fairly high price due to the large size [58]

Hey Robert, I justr did a quick check on the manufacturer of my helmet, it is the same and the same date as the one on ebay, that would explain why the paint matches so well, and the one on ebay is in much nicer condition except for the chin strap.

Not that I'm aware of Robert. I think they were just normal chin straps. I know they were used after the M15 type of officer helmet was used. I'm not so sure how or if they did it before they had lugs. :coffee:

I do not think they were intended as Pioneer helmets, it is just a different shade of grey, but do not quote me on this as I may be wrong.:)
