Chinscale Build - Guards Convex

Hi,

Am building some Pre M91 Convex chin scales from scratch .. (Yes, I like a challenge)

I wanted some Tombak ones but they are impossible to find. So I've bough a small sheet of it.
I've seen the very informative threads on rebuilding chinscales, which are a great help.

No problem cutting the new scales as I have a set as a template.

I am trying to think of a way to uniformly bend the scales into the convex shape. Some sort of press as I don't think hammering will be uniform enough

Any ideas on how to form the shape, much appreciated

Mark

Going to be tough as these kind of scales are actually curved both along the width and the length. Good luck! Did you manage to find a sheet of actual tombak (red brass)?

Unfortunately, I can offer no help or suggestions, perhaps Ron P. has some advice here.

Very interessting (y)
If you will find a source for diamond grained Morocco-leather, I would be very grateful if you could share it with me. I looked for it for years but couldn't find a Morocco-leather with the typically diamond grain from arround 1900. Today’s Morocco-leather is only grained in one direction and is no longer as fine/soft as it used to be.

This is an easy one.

1. First line up your templet scales on the edge of your brass.
That will give you the correct taper of the scales to be cut.
2. Cut the strip and heat up with a butane or MAP torch.
As soon as you get a uniform color quench in water
3. Get a wooden dowel aprx 3/8 of an inch and tape to your hard working ( check the contour of your scales )
4. Get a wooden dowel 1 " in diameter and sand out your contour on one end making sure you are square to the end.
A Dremel works great for this using a drum sanding bit.
5. Tape brass strip on top of your 3/8 dowel and start taping down your strip.
It will take probably 4 passes to get your shape .

Larger scales may need a larger form dowel the smaller ones a smaller
Lay out your scales and strike right on the scale .

Cut to shape.

Great information...

The obvious solution, dowel's .. as the formers.

Many thanks for your post
