It first seems to look Ok, but a view of the back in this case would be useful, especially of the fittings and of the way it is sewn...or riveted....

The picture is from Michael Baldwin book, he claimed it is an original chinstrap which I have doubt over it. Somehow some items in his books are not as what he claimed to be. I bought his 2 volumes at the recent SOS and I feel that he always has good justification for things that look wrong to me (I may be ignorant), so I decided to buy the rest of his volumes via the publisher. I just want to see what other "justification" that can appear. He does have a good collection and it did fetch good money at the auction.

I have to agree with pickelhauben - original hardware - new leather , In other words, a "restored original" chinstrap.

I am also member on two other french forums and we could discuss a lot about the three M. Baldwin auctions. A lot of good things, but some stuff with a lot of red flags too...Things that are shining bright and that are pictured in a "reference book" are not always golden references [-X
A lot of Baldwin lots that have been sold as "untouched battlefield picks up" were not.....And some fact explanations were simply wrong....

The name of a big collector or a "reference book" are never a garantee to buy some good stuf!!! [-X Always compare and only trust YOURSELF and your own experience !!!! Many guys have bought a M- Baldwin helmet to horror prices and then the book with pictures of it only that they can say they have a reference piece, without really understanding what they really have...

I agree....original fittings on a repro/new leather strap. Original brass buckles have rounded edges as we see here. The Baldwin collection auction was way out of my league. I did see pieces on display at the 2018 SOS but again too rich for my blood.

Hi Philippe,

Baldwin was smart to put everything in books before he passed on and he have unbelievable explanations to justify his "red flag" purchases. Publisher was also smart to put a mixture of headdress with uniforms and mess tins etc so that collectors tend to buy all volumes instead of volume just on headdress or just on uniforms. The publisher only took partial volumes to SOS so that collectors buy off their web for the rest of the volumes. Very smart business gimmick.

It has taken me a while (maybe I am not as smart LOL) to identify original and fake chinstraps. So I was a bit confused when Baldwin stated that the highlighted chinstrap is original. So much of being a collector!! I still think we ought to be honest, if it is a reproduction chinstrap, one just have to say that it's hard to get original chinstrap, so this example comes with a reproduction. I guess by now, most collectors have accepted the fact that it is not possible to get original chinstraps for all your haubes.

I don't think I even dare to look at the realised prices when the auctions end. Somehow, we have to be happy though as this means that the haubes in our collections will appreciate further. Haubes have not appreciated as much as steel helmets for the past 10 years.
