Chinstraps

This is not a helmet quiz but doesn't the middle guy look like a canvas strap? We will never know.....

Now this is an interesting pic!

We've seen canvas straps used on the M16 stahlhelm, it might have been Tony who submitted a pic of one. It would be interesting to see a side shot of some one wearing one on a pickelhaube to see the square strap ends. I see possibly 2 canvas straps, but what I find most interesting is the belt right behind the middle chaps head. That is not your standard OR's belt, there is no Gott Mit Uns buckle.

Who wore these belts ?

Didn't notice that George!
Nothing on the back of the card :x :x :x

In that last closeup the guy on the left has some ears.

Hi George,
The belts look like the Austrian roller buckle belt, mounted troops used this type of belt in the A-H military, but in the mid part of the war, it was also issued to the infantry as it was easer to make and cheaper. I would suspect that this groop of soldiers were issued what ever equipment they could come up with. Ther are several types of ersatz Hauben in the photo, with brass and gray fittings .

Looks like a boot camp platoon. As far as the belts go there are tanned belts with blacked out buckles, a black dyed belt with brass(?) buckle.

The 2 standing are armed with Gew 88's with ersatz bayonets. The 2 that are reclined appear to be armed with Gew 98's.

Pickelhaubes are filz w/brass trim, filz w/feldgrau trim, and some stahlblech mixed in.

Add the ersatz chin straps and you have one very cool pc Joe!

Makes me wonder what would have happened differently in 1914 had the German Army troops been fully equipted with all current gear and weapons, and all troops fully trained. Plus a supply system that was prepared to deal with all the logics for a long war.
