No star retainers on the base--also has single-ring type Kokarden.
How should it be classified?

The Kokarde without a dividing line in the silver ring indicates the wearer had not yet passed his officer examination--right?

Whoops! My mistake. Fähnrich wore standard officer Kokarden, which is what I thought it had at a quick glance. But when I enlarged the photos, they are Unteroffizier mit Portepee Kokarden. So the rank of the man was Feldwebel or Vizefeldwebel. You are going to see a cherry Unteroffizier mit Portepee Feldartillerie Pickelhaube for my end month update, you will see the same characteristics. All officer parts it seems, but with Unteroffizier mit Portepee Kokarden, and rounded spike base brads.
 
Is the undivided ring style of Kokarde slightly smaller than the officer version with a divided ring, then?
I've noticed a difference in sizes but wasn't sure if that could be attributed to maker variation or wartime materials scarcity/thriftiness with the metals.

My argument has been for a while that that type of ring is not the important part. The size of the cockade is important. It seems like this one has two different sizes of cockade. Not a full officer. It could fall into several categories. Would of course be nice to have measurements. :eek: 8) 8-) :-?
