I'm posting this for Ron. Cool unit. 2 companies. Martin commanded one so he must have been mega connected. Ron is supposed to explain all this shortly.

Joe, thanks for posting the pictures. I have really enjoyed the discussions on this forum and wanted to contribute something. This is my favorite helmet and I have been the custodian of it since 1985. It is a much heavier and "workmanlike" helmet than my enlisted Garde Du Corps helmet. I have not found much published information on this particular helmet and a lot of that information conflicts. Regretably, I do not have the ball topped spike that replaces the eagle in undress. I try to acquire the uniform to go with my favorite helmets but this along with my Jaeger Zu Pferde Officer is one that I did not succeed in getting.

Hi Ron,
What a beauty of helmet! Mensch Gott!
Otto

PS.
Hi Tony,
Gus, Max and me, we would like to know when you will travel with your tank.

Ron,
Super helmet. It truely is a rare find.
I have not found much published information on this particular helmet and a lot of that information conflicts.
Tell us what you know and maybe someone in the group will add to your information.
Regretably, I do not have the ball topped spike
I thought that the replacemant was a spike??? Are you talking about a kugelhelm? Bill

This "spike" is fluted with a small ball on the top. The LG were all NCO's and there were only two small platoons - one as personal bodyguards to the Kaiser and one to the Kaiserin. The officers were detailed and wore their original regimental uniform. I get the impression that they were "para military" being a cross between a miltary unit and a police unit. THey were more like the presidents secret service than a military combat unit. The waffenrock is impressive and is green with blue trim. I wish I had one to go with the helm!

Yes platoons not companies! Martin always claims he commanded a Troop of these guys but he has sort of a habit of exagerating at times.

Fine helmet ... I am very happy to see the black eagle like that.

Maybe not. A Troop in British military usage is the cavalry equivalent of a platoon.

You're right, my mistake. I guess I just show my utter dislike and contempt for Martin.
This next is a quote from his book, which might shed some light on this unit as I do not believe many people will read his book. Also a picture from his book, and the guy in the Dragoon uniform is no doubt our local hero Martin himself.

My next move was a piece of luck. I was appointed, the duration of one year, troop leader to his Majesty the Kaiser's bodyguard -- the so-called Liebgendarmerie -- quartered at Potsdam. This distinguished unit a strength of have an ordinary squadron, divided into two troops. The first, my own troop, was composed entirely of NCOs, the pick of the cavalry of the Prussian army, the second, known as the Liebgarde der Kaiserin, been informed of troopers, drawn from the 10 Prussian Cuirassier regiments and officered by a lieutenant of the Regiment of which Her Majesty was Honorary Colonel -- the second Cuirassier.

Our immediate chief was General von Scholl, one of the principal officers of the Imperial Household, who bore the imposing title of "Captain General of the palace and bodyguard" and was a conspicuous figure at court functions on account of the 18th-century uniform he wore.

I am posting this for Sven:

Not just NCOs, they had to be sergeants. 1989 the Leibgendarmerie was new structured. The old platoons build up the new 1. platoon (green uniform like mentioned in the thread). The 2. new one wears a white uniform closely to the uniform of the Kürassier-Regiment Königin, Nr. 2. The second platoon was also called "Leibgarde ihrer Majestät der Kaiserin"

Para-military? No, they had no police authority.
At this time the guard service for monarchs etc. were an usual military business here. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Europe was new organized between the monarchs at the Wiener Kongress (Vienna Convention).
One of the results was a regulation when and why foreign visitors get a life guard/honor guard. The honor guard formation formed by 15 cuirassiers for a king f.e., or 7 for a foreign minister... (some years ago my job (honor guard, not minister )

Sven.

Greetings, All!

I would dearly like to see Col. Ron's helmet but I get a bad link sign off of all of the images.

Am I holding my mouth at the wrong angle or something?

Cheers,

Laurie

Laurie my fault. This is an old post and the images were hosted on my old problematic domain (coljs). I let the domain go and the pictures dissapeared as did 200+ spam mails every day. Here they are again
