What do you think gents?
Original or parts helmet? I do not like brass fittings in combination with grey grommets...

Fellows,
The markings are not 'branded' but punched...
Is this a common way to 'mark' a neckguard ?
... :-? ...This sure is a gap in my "Hauben-knowledge"...
Guess I have a go on Joe's website !

Go ahead Joe, list them!

Old stamped marks tend to be more 'rounded' and gentler to the leather, these look recently punched, having cut into the leather.

They're really crooked!

More?

A little strange but could that have just been what was laying around at the time when the helmet was constructed? the helmet is dated 1916. :-k

I don't think its common at all but it is documented.

No extra holes from what I can see. Can a Saxon wappen fit the same holes as a Mecklenburg wappen? The liner is interesting from what I can see of it, very light color.

:-k :-k :-k Okay okay okay–I have gotten a bunch of e-mails-- I intentionally did not list them originally. I'm even thinking about taking down my fakes article. There is no question in my mind that the people who do this to deceive read this forum. So if I detail my opinion–yes opinion and the reasons they are given the fuel to make things better in the fake department. They are getting better all the time anyway. I don't know if trying not to help them is too late or not. I can remember quite a few years ago when an extremely small group of people knew anything at all about markings. Now the education level has risen exponentially. I remember being told by some collectors that the markings were entirely undecipherable. Give it up. We did not and neither did those who are faking. One of the great advantages of going to SOS is that people show you all sorts of little tricks. But it is done person to person. Trust and reputation are extremely important. I even discovered how to tell the fakes in Bavarian general officer enamel. Once I tried to do it on the forum and did not get an answer that was convincing. I was probably very naïve. Now because of hands-on training I know. Or at least I think I know. All I can do is offer an opinion. Opinion. I have posted a gallery of markings on the website. One of the best ways you can figure things is to look at those examples. For goodness sakes there are probably even errors in there. This is just a hobby about collecting pointy hats! Most of us are just collectors trying to improve. I have just been doing this for a long time now. I think I know my markings but that is my opinion. Nobody rolled over and make me king. I am not right 100% of the time. I feel quite confident that this particular Mark is bad. However, there are always those who professionally we called “hyenas in the wood line” just waiting. I will be glad to go over the reasons with those that I trust at SOS. This probably makes me sound like an evil person but I really legitimately do not know what to do- explain in detail and get damned for telling everyone or not explain anything and get damned for not sharing. I think that regular members of this forum deserve to know opinions. And I can share some points with those that will keep it private by e-mail. I am just very hesitant to publicly post this. Perhaps I'm overly cautious or paranoid or maybe just old... this is not like casting versus stamping- these marks are not that difficult to counterfeit.

The markings look odd to me as well and can it be explained that this helmet, an obvious M95, is dated 1916?

Best regards,

Edwin

Didn't you just get out of prison? Didn't you bounce a check off of Weitze several years ago?– how do I know I can trust you?– Didn't you drink a bunch of beer that Paul was saving?

Darn you Joe! (Just kidding.) Those are very good reasons. I'd like to know the one about the Bavarian General enamel, since that's on my 'wants' list, but having worked with high fire enamel, I can make several educated guesses... still like to know though. Thankfully, there are still a lot of honest people out there who list replicas as such, or acknowledge that they don't know much about the subject, so it's buyer beware... which it is all of the time anyway!

Cheers!
