Hi Sebastian: I would say that this is a police helmet. The spike top and silver fittings are typical for police. Brian

The police of the city of Leipzig had a very similar helmet plate (the lyra does not fit) but the coat of arms (as of Dresden) would be inverted. Is the image perhaps mirrorred?

I did find these arms, the city of Dresden, perhaps they're the one on your police helmet.

Those are two very different Wappens. The one posted initailly has what looks like a Glockelspiel on the top, yours has a Fleur De Li. Plus, oak leaves are completely different etc etc. I think Mike nailed it, yours James could be Dresden. Maaaaybe?
