Felts were issued with a thinner leather or ersatz liner.
They do not hold up well after 100 years.
it has been said that some felts were issued without a liner .
You did good on yours and I hope you did not have to pay too much for it.
It does have a repo chin strap and the price on originals are starting to climb higher and higher.
If you can find an original expect to pay $150-$250 for it.

From a restorer's viewpoint....the filz helme liner is so often missing because of the light thread weight used to stitch in the liner. The thread used was similar in weight/thickness or even finer to that used for the officer silk liner only a different colour of course. The thread used, is similar to what you would stitch up a shirt with. This thread is not equal to that used for the OR's leather pickelhaube liner which is thicker. I have never heard of filz helmets issued without liner nor have I seen one without liner that did not have stitch holes in it. However, this is not to say that there are not examples out there. On the other hand on second thought....has anyone ever seen a felt hat either man's or woman's ever produced without a sweatband around the rim??

The source was a couple of dealers and a predominant collector.
Dealers would say this to make a sale.
The collector I speak of has been collecting for 40+ I would guess.
But who knows for sure ?
The guys who were there have long gone .

Hey Mathew, chill....its just a forum and comment, so relax.
I agree with Brian on the thread on the filz helmets, the missing of the liners and all the filz that I have seen have the stitch holes in them. Usually these liners are dye black but I do have one that is dye brown and the material is more of war time leather.
