James,

although the writing was a bit tricky, that is Major. d.R. Professor Dr. Jur. Friedrich August van Calker, commanding officer of the I. Ersatz-Bataillon of the Infanterie-Leib-Regiment. Major van Calker commanded the replacement battalion for the entire war. Born in Wesel on 24 October 1864, he entered the Infanterie-Leib-Regiment as a one year volunteer and was commissioned as a Sekonde-Lieutenant d.R. on 19.12.87. Promoted to Premier-Lieutenant d.R. on 24.8.95, to Hauptmann d.R. on 24.1.04 and char. Major d.R. on 3.3.11.

Regards
Glenn

James,

I am assuming, given the equipping of these guys with puttees, mountain boots and Alpine walking sticks, that they are a draft for the Alpenkorps in the Dolomites in the early/mid summer of 1915.

Glenn
