I think on the originals, the 'ear cutouts' flared a bit, so that from the front, the side skirt looked almost vertical at those points. That's my acid test. Dunno if it's right or not.
I'm aging up one of these replicas right now, since I've never been able to find an affordable original and I did some metal work on the cutouts and visor. Of course, I'll never try to pawn it off as an original!

Yes, the lack of the flared edge seems to be the big goof on most fakes, fortunately.

Thanks for your compliments gentlemen. It is indeed very hard to find an original, but patience pays... I've been looking for one for about 20 years or so and finally I found one that met my standards...
