I know this isn’t Imperial German, but I really wanted to share this, so here it is. I recently received this salty 1st model troppenhelm from a trade. This is what the shell looked like when I received it:


As you can see, there was a giant breach in the cork shell, and all the crumbled shards of cork were giving the shell a wavy appearance. Being someone who enjoys a little project, I decided to patch the hole and to preserve the helmet’s domed shape.
I used brown packing paper, patches of linen, and ph neutral bookbinding glue to help stabilize the crumbling helmet and to give it structure and strength. Here’s what it looks like right now:


It’s now very strong, and I’ve ordered some original german thread to stitch everything closed once I’m done, what do ya’ll think? I’m open to all criticism and advice!
