There is some interesting language in this card, I had not hear the term Weibchen before, his writing is rather difficult to read, do you have a transcription for this card, or do you have others in this hand?

No Gus, I do not have a transcription and I could not decipher everything. Just enough to understand that they are escorting the body of an Oberleutnant killed in action. No date but I would assume 1914, as it is obviously on the Western front.

From what I can tell..

Mein liebes Weibchen,
sende dir hier eine Karte von dem Moment?, da unser Oberleutnant nach dem Bahnhof ... wird. Er führte die vorletzte Schützenkompanie, wo ich auch dabei bin. Kaum das er die Stellung recht betretenhattem wurde er und ein Bursche von einer schweren Mine getroffen, nach 2 tagen ist er im hiesigen Lazarett gestorben, dem Burschen geht es besser. Du siehst hier die Straße, auch mein Quartier, das mein Aufenthalt ist, zu Pferd kennt man mich nicht ist zu weit weg. Bezeichnung ? .

Am 27. wirst du die Karte haben, dann denke daran, dass ich wieder im Bereich des Todes bin. Sei mir herzlichst gegrüßt und geküsst von deinem lieben treuen Franz.

Rough Translation:

My dear (little) wife,
here I send you a card of the moment? at which our Oberleutnant is brought/escorted ? to the train station. He led the next to last company, to which I am assigned too. He had hardly put foot into the trench when he and one of our boys were hit by a heavy mine. After two days he died in the hospital, the boy is doing better. Here you see the street and also my quarters where I am housed. I am not very recognizable on horseback, too far away.

You will receive the card around the 27th, then remember that I am in the grasp of death again. With dear greetings and kisses from you loving and faithful Franz.

Both the Lance Pennants and the Feldzeichen look very dark in the photograph. I am thinking perhaps more likely, Ulanen-Regiment Nr. 19?

For my part, not so sure, Glenn. The pennants could be black for this special funeral ceremony and this guy has got clearly a white and black Feldzeichein but he's an officier or an NCO... so your hypothesis could be correct.

This portrait of Rittmeister d.R. Konrad Eggers appears on the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg site.

The May 1915 "Stellenbesetzung" of the Württemberg Army shows Rittmeister Eggers as still attached to the staff of the 27. Infanterie-Division. He received the a Friedrichs-Orden Knight's Cross 1st Class with Swords while assigned as an Ordonnanz-Offizier there on 25 February 1915.

Leutnant d.R.: 18.1.01 M11m

So many fotos of this funeral even in war time and in France. Obviously this was a man of importance. Do we know how he was killed?
