That's an interesting photograph.

A cavalryman with an infantry rifle. Guess there were no carbines to hand?

This is a great photo. The Schutztruppe were mounted infantry. They rode to battle but fought on foot, they were not cavalry. Very interesting campaign. Check out this site http://www.germancolonialuniforms.co.uk

very nice photo. Have you try to decipher the writing on the back? I read "Schwakopmund" which is a city in namibia and the date 13 Feb. 1903.

Hello all,

on the backside is written that the picture was send on 2nd January from Swakopmund and arrived on 13th February 1905 (!!) in Coblenz.

You can see brother Paul.
