DIY Spike vent!

I thought this might be of interest, it’s a relic spike base with a homemade shutter to close the vent holes.
The chap that made this has removed the spike and inserted his homemade creation, which is designed
To re-attach the spike. So the brass insert stays still and the spike rotates to open or close the vents.
The poor guy must have had a cold head!!!!

Stu, are you sure that is "home made" by the soldier? The top of the spike was impressed around the spike neck, you would ruin the spike by getting the top off. I believe what you have there, is an M1887 spike which was also used on the M1891. The M1895 that we are all so familiar with, did away with this rotating vent cover, probably to save brass.

Hi Tony+Kaiser
I agree, it would ruin the spike gtting the top off :-? so was there a spike with an in built vent, you mention the M1887 was that like this one?
The reason I thought it was homemade is because it looks quiet crude, It
dosent help that it is a relic and is damaged.
Does anyone have a photo of an intact version?

Thanks Toney+Kaiser
I had no idea that there had been a spike like this with a closing vent, its is also nice
To know that I have an example in my collection, even if it is in poor shape.
I am certainly learning a fair bit thanks to PH.com :thumb up:
