I have been trying to figure this out, and my nearest guess is that it is a well done parts helmet. It appears to be an issue helmet shell, but there are no holes for a round spike base. Round visor so not Dragoon , Hessian, or Bavarian. Issue helmet with liner but officer chinscales????? I am assuming by the solder repairs to the Wappen that it is not the one that belongs there. It appears to have an M42 spike and base. Overall somebody spent some time on this doctor job.

A nice example of a frankenhaube... Could it be a converted firefighter helmet?

You're right, a parts is parts Frankenhaube. Brian is probably right, since the cross base looks original to the helmet and also looks like it was recycled and fitted to it (you'll notice that it's contour looks as if its 'arms' have been bent upward and as stated was probably from an earlier style helmet. I would agree that the plate isn't original to the helmet and that along with the soldered mess on one wing, where it looks as if the metal was broken, it's probably not worth much. Would have been an interesting fire / civil helmet example had somebody not messed with it.

Maybe someone really wanted the parts, but it's likely a case of simply not knowing any better.
Better to buy reference books before buying a pointy hat.
