Does anyone know what this is?

The center piece with the different shaped Saxon shield with the crown above it and the laurel leaves is the device that goes on the Bandoleer or "shoulder strap" worn with the cartouche/cartridge box, as used by Officers of the Saxon Garde Reiter and Carabiner, and also the Saxon Ulans wore this same device on their bandoleer. It's shown in the book: "The Imperial German Cavalry 1871-1914" by Herr & Nguyen, on page 71.

Someone married the starburst device with the Saxon emblem, at some point of time after WW1.

I had one of these Saxon Officer Bandoleer devices that I bought a few years ago, and I had a very frustrating time trying to sell it, probably because the mounting devices on the back side were broken off, and because probably 99% of collectors don't know what the device was used for and don't have any interest in it. I finally sold it at the last S.O.S. I only knew what it was because I searched for it in my reference books.

I contacted the eBay seller yesterday and told him what I have written above. He wrote me back and wondered if the two parts were worth anything, and I told him what I felt the two parts are worth. It appears that the mounting devices have been altered on the back side of this device as well. It was something in his deceased father's collection.

Best wishes,

Alan

Such a loose item with the saxon wappen may be difficult to sell, but can be extremely hard to find if needed, for example, the garde reiter sabel had also a attached coat of arms that was removed when reissued to an other military department, thus almost al sabel on the marked miss it, if found it increases its value enourmously, but alas I never found one for my sabel ( it is not the one on eBay which is for the bandolier as explained above)
