There are 4 distinct species of Sabre Tooth tigers on display and one can stare at them for hours, they are so amazing.

The big one is a very large Archeotherium, nicknamed Hell Pig when first discovered in the 1800's. But it was no pig, rather the largest mammalian land predator to ever walk the earth, the T Rex of mammals. It was built to track and destroy its prey and had no equal. Over millions of years they grew very large with the largest genus nicknamed "Terminator Pig" however they died out, hunted down by pack animals like Dapheonus - Bear Dogs.

Think of it as the size of a Shire horse, with the head of a Hippo, could run like a giraffe, eyesight of a cheetah, smell of a wolf, and teeth of a sabre tooth. Not something you'd want to meet in the wild!

edit - dont believe the AI generated slop on the internet saying these evolved into modern boars and pigs. They did no such thing and have zero relation to anything today, in fact the closest might be a hippo. Back in the day skulls and prehistoric animals were often named after something the skulls resembled to the people of the time, so this was a "pig" and the Dapheonus looked like a cross between a bear and a dog skull, hence "Bear Dog". I am sure the interweb AI is telling people that bears and dogs evolved from them with comic book graphics as well!

Also had a collection of International combat helmets, from Russian to Japanese.

When I decided to leave militaria it was all eventually sold or auctioned off, but the last thing I sold was my Imperial German collection and here I am back in the hobby a decade later but this time with a lot more focus thanks to Tony's great advice.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to every comment and you look much younger; I had you at the end of the forties journey maybe early fifties. So, congratulations on that as well. (y)

Please excuse me for asking questions that aren't the norm. I'm always interested in what motivates other collectors to collect what they collect especially when they are of this level. I would love to see your other collections from what I've seen you have great taste and only buy quality. I love anything WWI regardless of the combatants Nation, but I try to focus on Germany and Austria.

You really have had a blessed life and that's awesome. At the risk of asking too many questions what caused you to leave Militaria.

With the combo of Tonys knowledge, contacts and your stacks it can only end one way and what a beautiful result.
Again, congratulations on putting together such a wonderful collection.

No worries, I’ll post some other stuff later this weekend. And yes thanks I’ve been fortunate enough to have been able to enjoy a variety of collecting genres over the years. I started collecting Militaria when I was young - 14, but what a 14 year old can buy locally. Mostly beat up things and buttons and badges. I’ve collected rock albums, concert posters, Lord of the Rings memorabilia, and other miscellany over the years. After Militaria I got into diecast planes and tanks but sold them all off as well. I left Militaria for a variety of reasons, one was the unseemly nature of the WW2 German collecting hobby which is a topic unto itself that I’d rather not delve back into.

But Imperial German collecting is a different animal and I enjoy the interactions I have and I find it a fascinating period of time. I think I was born in the wrong century as I love the gala and regal Imperial 1800’s European architecture and art. The headgear and epherema of Imperial Germany encapsulates it all in my opinion and each one is a study unto itself.

Tony had been a great mentor and I’ve learned so much from him and others here as well in both my go arounds in this genre.
