Doughboy helmet

Dear all,

Last year I got this doughboy helmet from ebay said to be from a pioneer of the US 2nd division who participated in the Meusse-Argonne offensive in late 1918.

Moreover, the following number (ZC 186) is stamped into the edge of the back:




What does this number mean?

The numbers stamped into your US Model 1917 helmet identify the specific heat treatment (Austenite number) and the lot number of the helmet. These numbers were used for quality control purposes.
