The seller has a creative answer:

"Q: Are there any reproduction parts on either of the helmets you have offered? Jan-04-10
A: To the best of my knowledge there are not (except for the already mentioned possible chin strap)any repro parts. I have not taken these apart or altered them in any way. They are as you see them exactly the way I found/bought them. I wish I could give you a definate answer but you must rely on the photos as I did also."

His reply when told the whole thing was a replica:

"Your opinion is noted."

Maybe the bids are just shills...

This is his response when I asked why he didn't come clean and list these as reproductions:

Dear ebay-er,

I can appreciate your comment however where does it say "original" in the discription? Further more the potential buyer is reminded to Ask Questions before bidding. I have seen copies and new reproductions and as you well know they don't look like this. I'm no expert so that is why I leave it up to the buyer to do his home work so they are satisified with the purchase. Thanks

I wrote back that it was his conscience, not mine. What an ass! I do feel bad for the people he suckers in, but they'll learn too late. Wait until they take one to a show to sell it....

According to Goofbay, if I'm using it correctly, ke469me has sold 0% of his items... I wonder what that's about? Any ideas?

Since the item is listed under "Original Period Items -Germany -
Hats & Helmets," and he does not state that it is a replica, a bidder would
likely infer that it is an original item.

I beleive all you need to do is report him to Ebay with specific item number stating that item is not as described and or original.

Or

Simpy tell them he has it listed in Original catagory and it is a reproduction

they should pull the auction

if they pull it and he lists again, do the same thing

After 3 or 4 times they will suspend him

best you can do

I emailed the seller and asked if these were from the collection of the late LTC Dave Smith. His response was that the estate did not give him liberty to disclose that.

Dave was an avid collector but openly admitted to making helmets that he believed he could never afford. He had quite a few good original helmets but I have seen none of these offered by this seller.

This looks like one of the recent copies from India. I don't know if Dave Smith had any of those.

There are several Indian companies producing helmets in varying degrees of (fortunately) bad quality:

Does Ebay react to reports nowadays? When I was young and optimistic I tried to report items several times but never saw any action.

In the Seller History Tool you can select to include sold items only, evidently he did sell some helmets. The one I mentioned above (140362229002) sold for US $899.70 and the buyer left an overwhelmingly positive feedback..

It used to be that bidders could contact each other and warn about fakes and such (some people knew they were bidding on a replica and didn't care)... Now that can't happen. The ebay 'community' has become very sterile indeed.

I see the bidding ended and it didn't sell...

If you contact the seller and ask him to admit his items are replicas, he will turn you in to eBay for violation of their e-mail guidelines.

He has been shown the federal laws on mail fraud, too.

The eBay response to the seller's attempts at selling fakes:

"With regard to your report on this seller who sells fraudulent items,
we're concerned about any possible violations of eBay policy and are
sincerely grateful to our members for help in spotting problems.

We take these complaints very seriously and investigate every report we
receive. If we find that a violation has occurred, we'll take
appropriate action. "

Thats rich. He canceled all bids and ended the auction early, only to instantly offer the helmet again (140373266064). It looks like the first bid on the new offer is from the same bidder who held the high bid on the last offer before cancellation.

Each time I bid on an item that is then ended early I send a request to ebay to remove the "End early" option entirely. Who knows, enough requests might take effect some day.

I love his description that HE ended the auction because of a mistake, but it looks like the same old line of bull as before!

On the other hand, he's doing everything BUT admitting they're fakes (since he has them listed under original items, I'll call them fraudulent fakes). "Do your research" in other words, "If you're stupid enough to think this is original, I'll screw you over big time!"
