Hey Geo,
This is the normal infantry shovel, and it is easy to see that they could be a real pain when running, I have seen a photo of Soldiers with a field made shovel carrier to carry the standard shovel handle up. I would expect to see black shoulder straps if this man was a pioneer, is that an M1915 helmet he is wearing, if so, he would be a second line soldier with an M1888 rifle, or it would be a pre war photo. The gloss on the helmet is impressive.
