Great helmet !
How can it be any better
all the extras
What is the title of the soldier ?
The 2 short words above his name ?
I am not familiar with the titles for the enlisted
Eisenbahn troops .
I have an enlisted man's helmet to an Eisenbahn unit
but don't remember which unit and there is no name tag
in it .
The 3 helmets together look super
Nothing like the silver trim
Thanks for the photos
Steve

Tony ;
Why would a 1 Year Volunteer have a helmet that
has a Kammer unit issue stamp in it ?
The 1 Year Volunteers as I understand had to
buy and pay for their own uniforms and helmets
unless
were they allowed to buy / purchase from the Kammer ?

Thanks
Steve

The first one is a beauty ,but those others are no less

Nice haubes those 3 in a row :thumb up:

Jonas

Here is my Eisenbahn issue enlisted helmet .
I sold or traded it to a local collector
but I bought it back in 2008 .

Now I remember my helmet is E.R.2. also .Looks like it was issued 2 times
1888 and 1896 . II.B. 5.C one marking to the left of the 5.C I can not read
the 2 slash marks to the right of 5.C I issued 2 times

The Eisenbahn troops worn Prussian Garde uniforms and helmets
not sure of the reason . They were also allowed an Garde Muster flags for their units .
One of the most beautiful flags of the Prussian Armee are the Eisenbahn flags.
White silk with heavy silver bullion threads for the cyphers in the 4 corners and
around the eagle center . The eagle is also of silver bullion wire which is on a black
metallic mess center . Only 5 of these flags were ever made . 4 for the Eisenbahn units
and 1 for the Garde Pioneers . The Garde Pioneer was for years at Rastatt ,
it has been transferred to the DHM .
Steve

Think of all the hours it took to complete one flag .

Steve,

Another excerpt from The Great War Dawning. I am biased but I think everyone should have this. It is a bit pricey but like everything made by this publisher it is a work of art.

One-Year Volunteers
A one-year volunteer (OYV) had to equip himself with rations, quarters, uniforms, and equipment). He had to pay also for a horse (if needed) or had to pay into the remount fund. The cost was generally equal to the cost of one year at university and depended on the kind of unit a one-year volunteer decided to join. He could choose his regiment; however, infantry, Jäger, engineers, and foot artillery were expected to pay between 1,750 and 2,200 Mark for their year. Field artillery and train units increased the cost to around 2,300-2,700 Mark. But for cavalry and mounted field artillery, the costs soared to 3,400 to 3,600 Mark a year. There is a misconception that one-year volunteers purchased most of the uniforms and equipment from commercial sources. In reality, most of the uniforms and equipment were either purchased or rented from the regiment.

Thank you gentlemen for the nice comments.

Steve that is a very nice helmet too and the flag is beautiful.

Joe i have send a pm with a picture of the stamp i hope you have recieve it.

The "myth" is that all Einjährig-Freiwilliger (One year volunteer) were required to buy their own uniforms etc. And they usually did. However, in truth, issue items such as Waffenrock, Pickelhaube, and Mütze etc. were also made available to Einjährig-Freiwilliger for use for an annual fee. Basically, the unit rented these items to Einjährig-Freiwilliger. In some cases, clothing items were marked as being specifically for use by Einjährig-Freiwilliger. So a cloth owner's label named to a Einjährig-Freiwilliger in a liner with issue stamps is not uncommon. I have quite a few.

Beautiful set of helmets, great detail photo's as well! Thanks for sharing.

Steve, the Eisenbahn flag is superb, a rare treat to be sure. It must have taken quite a while to hand embroider these flags.

I agree. Like other technical troops Pioneer was often applied. However, in the case of the railroad I do not know how homogenous this was based on some graveyard stuff I have been sent. Seems like they got an awful lot of guys that were almost just day laborers. Those guys had more common titles. Only my view.

Excellent helmet(s) in beautiful condition!
Excellent contribution about Einj. Freiwilliger also...

Few views more educated or respected than yours Joe. I pondered if the use of Pionier comes from the fact that Eisenbahn are essentially wearing the uniform of a Garde Pionier?

I love the three silver helmets photo at the bottom of the first post by Westfront.as Nicely done :thumbright: Steve said, nothing beats silver on black. And a superb Eisenbahn issued helmet. Here is my Model 1871 Preußen Eisenbahn Regt (Railway) Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pickelhaube. The helmet is unit marked to several Preußen Eisenbahn Regiments and Battalions. The Pickelhaube is also owner marked to a "Pionier Hönicke". Link here: http://www.kaisersbunker.com/dunkelblau/helmets/dbh35.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks
Steve
