EM helmet of the Dragoon-Regiment „König“ (2nd Wurttemberg) No. 26

Dear collector friends,
may I ask about your opinions about the meaning of the stamp „2DR26“? Does it mean „2nd escadron of DR26“ or „DR26, 2nd of Wurttemberg“?
Thank you in advance for your help, as I’m not sure about it.

I believe the "2DR26" means "2. Wurttembergisches Dragoner Regt. (26)"

In other words, the 26th Regiment was the 2nd Dragoon Regiment of Wurttemburg, which you already knew.

Congratulations Sandy on acquiring this absolutely beautiful condition helmet! (y)

The Alexander Dahl Company maker label is the earliest one I have ever seen for this famous and prolific leather goods and military equipment manufacturer in Imperial Germany.

Best Wishes,

Alan

Thank you for your kind words and expertise Alan. I was thinking „2nd escadron“, since „DR26“ was already very clear.
However, the stamping regulations remain a mystery to me.
Following, it’s a free translation of the stamp regulation §42,3 of the Prussian clothing regulation for enlisted men - part 1 - from 1888 (I think the Wuerttemberg regulation was similar). I don't think I have seen a helmet with the correct 5 or 6 stamps as they should be:

§42, 3 (Acceptance and stamping):
1. Stamp (Regiment): The items accepted by the regimental clothing commission will immediately be stamped with the acceptance stamp indicating the troop unit and, as soon as they have been found to be in good order during the inspection.
2. Stamp (Year): A second stamp indicates the year of inspection. In years in which there is no inspection (Musterung), the second stamp and the hand out to the battalions may take place by way of exception, but the pieces must be inspected as far as possible at the next inspection and only then put into use (§46, 4).
3. Stamp (Unit): When received by the battalions, they are stamped with a third stamp, showing the battalion's name.
4. Stamp (Year): When handed out to the companies, they are stamped with the year, as a sign that they have been put into use.
5. Stamp (Company): Finally, the pieces receive the company stamp,
6. Stamp (Garniture): and the garniture stamp (6th stamp).
Cavalry regiments and independent battalions are accordingly stamped five times.

Sandy, your substance and insight coupled with sincere camaraderie is astounding.
The world of such people is long gone...

Great information Sandy, thank you! Like you I have never seen 5-6 stamps on a helmet in all my years of collecting.

Hi,
An EM M95 Pickelhaube with all the correct markings:
  1. FR 39 (on the left, not very clearly visible)
  2. 1896 (accepted by regiment, this is before the Bekleidungsämter took over that task)
  3. 1.B. for 1st battalion
  4. 1896 received by battalion (or when handed to 3rd company?)
  5. 3.C. for 3rd company
  6. "I" Garnitur stamp
In addition size stamped 57 1/2 all the way to the right.

Regards,
Lars

Thank you, you are welcome.

First off Sandy do you want me to break away postings after #23 and move it to a new thread in Imperial German Helmet and Clothing Regulations? If I don’t it will get lost in the endless thread of Latest Find.

Sandy you just gave a great many English speakers, including myself, a roadmap / legend to leather helmet stamps. A great many of us including myself did not understand the order that these stamps were applied. That is on your website is it not? It should be. Excellent work Sandy

Thank you gentlemen and thank you Lars for this excellent example. It’s great to see a correct stamped helmet 🤩

Tony, as requested I started a new thread in Imperial German Helmet and Clothing Regulations. The stamp ordinance is not on my website, but you are right Tony. It's really interesting and worth to be listed as a separate excerpt from the clothing regulations. I will start a new entry on my website (y) Thank you for the tipp 🙂

Dear friends,
as suggested by Tony, I've added the stamping regulations to my website. It can also be downloaded as a pdf in the Download-Area.

Superb, Sandy Congratulations(y)

I agree with the description. Indeed, the M60 of the Dragons does not change until 1894. However, it will all the same be lightened and shortened in particular in 1867.
I have the impression that there is no seam under the back chine... The very half-spherical shape of the hull could also confirm a production of the method after 1867 without a schell seam..;)
Regarding 2DR26, it is effectively the 2nd Württemberg regiment of Dragon N°26. If it was the 2nd Squadron, we would have 2.E.
