Ending 2008 with Two Great Helmets

My final two helmet purchases for 2008. I took advantage of the dollar gaining on the pound and bought these two pieces.

First up, a Boer War era Royal Artillery Foreign Service Helmet. This example is fantastic and I couldn't have hoped to find one as nice as this one. Unfortunately it is snowing, which is rather un-sun helmet like weather, so the photos in my office are the best I can do at this point.

This is a Yeomanry Cavalry helmet of the British Dragoon pattern. It is from the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry Cavalry. The helmet is actually silver finish but the light is terrible today so it looks more brass. But it is about as silver as a helmet can get!

A close up of the badge shows the Welsh dragon on the front. Montgomeryshire is a Welsh county, and had formed Yeomanry in 1813 during fears of an invasion by France. One regiment of Yeomanry was formed during the Boer War and three regiments were formed during the First World War. This unit is of interest to me because of its involvement on the Palestine Front during the First World War.

Boer War era helmets that are original khaki are almost non-existent. Even many British military museums do not have one. Most were white and worn with covers or white and dyed khaki. So this was a real score for me!
