This is not a pristine helmet but since the rarety of the materials they used its not so common to find one

Its a one piece shell made out of tombac and painted black

This is a helmet i bought from my friend karel van bosstraeten long before he passed away

Think he would appriciate it knowing it is still in my collection and will be for many years to come 20230228_154239.jpg20230228_154249.jpg20230228_154256.jpg20230228_154308.jpg20230228_154324.jpg20230228_154349.jpg20230228_154415.jpg20230228_154431.jpg20230228_154451.jpg20230228_154619.jpg

Thanks for the pictures of the ersatz pickelhauben. They held a brief moment in the Great War and are quite unique.
Best regards
John

Nice and rare ersatz helmet. Not common to find. I never had one of these. It is on my wanted list.

Really unique, and one I have never seen either.

I have a couple of steel ersatz ( not tombac) that look very similar, but do not have a rear spine or visor trim.

The trim on yours really does make this ersatz variation pop! I really like it.

Thank you for showing it!

Bryan.

The shell looks brass to me though the scratches.
Have you ever given the shell the magnet test?
If it sticks it is steel and will rust.
If it does not stick it very well could be brass or tomback.

If you are refering to the one witch started this topic it is a tombac shell it thus not stick to a magnet

Hello,
Indeed, this model is extremely rare. Only one manufacturer made this model, either in tombac or aluminum. In one or the other metal it is always the same bomb, reinforced at the edge by a hem enclosing a wire.
Here is my brass model, it is a Badois, then a photo of a model identical to yours found in excavation.

Then we have another tombac helmet, which was offered to me some time ago, and finally, a detail of the same model in "Duralumin" made by the same manufacturer, with the same stamping press.

Great photos Clovis. I have seen a bavarioan officer helme made from aluminium.....would this have been made by the same manufacturer of these helmets?

Great to see an other model. and you know by any chance who the manufacturer was that produced these types. I have been looking in books and online but not yet found what i wanted to know

@CLOVIS 57 would my example be the same maker?

Hello,
b.Loree :
You have to see the helmet in detail. The model of this manufacturer is made with the same matrix whether it is in tombac or aluminum. For example, I have a Saxon "troupe" helmet in aluminum but it does not have the same shape and therefore it is from another supplier.
On my Saxon, only the hull is in aluminium, the visor and the nape of the neck are in leather, sewn on the hull.

Hello Kaiser :
Concerning the name of the manufacturer of the "Metallic Ersatz" I only know Bing, Weissenburger and Von der Heyden which were the subject of Patents deposited and acceptance by contract of the army. Unlike cuirassier helmets which were stamped by the manufacturer (Juncker, Nachtzigall, Lachmann etc...) the ersatz-metallic infantry helmets were not.
