So what do you think? Helmet gone theatrical prop? I've seen one piece chin straps like that, but thought they were always separated at the center.

I agree it's a theatrical prop

This may be one of the resin helmets mentioned in Bowman's two-volume reference. An antique metallic finish can be achieved by adding metal powder to casting resin. I made the "metal" parts for a 17th Hussars busby replica that way about 15 years ago.

It wouldn't be too bad as a basis for a desk lamp, either.
If it works for football helmets, why not imperial headgear?

Actually my PB 29 helmet had been made into a lamp prior to my rescuing it. They cut the spike tip off and ran a hollow tube through the helme. This supported the light fixture and hid the plug wire. I presume there as some kind of base for the haube to sit on. Anyway, I bought the helmet, found a new pioneer style spike and brought it back to a better life in my collection.

That sounds like a neat lamp, aside from the sacrilege perpetrated on the helmet.

I'm thinking about rigging up a lamp from a replica M15 Pickelhaube that once served as a classroom display...maybe with a base simulating a bit of battlefield with some shell casings, barbed wire, and an iron cross scattered around the helmet.
