Easy to identify even from the back, yes? :compress:

Thanks Joe, I remember yours. Very nice. Bruno also has a beautiful one, and everyone else must have one too....... :-k

Thierry Jousson was observant and kindly let me know via e-mail that the collar insignia identified the fellow in the photo as being from either Chevauleger Regiment 2 or 7, as he wears the insignia of the 11th Bayern Infanterie Division on the collar of his Feldgrau M10 Chevaulegers-Regt Waffenrock. So I made that change. Merci Thierry!

Congratulation again and again, dear Tony. Still a very nice and scarce helmet in a mint condition :o !!!

Maxime

PS: but... where are the tunic and the Mütze ???

Tony:

I traded a unit marked FAR helmet similar to yours "many moons ago"... but it wasn't near as nice as the condition! Congrats on a very cool helmet. :D

Dave

Tony,

Excellent helmet and no, everyone does not have one!

Are the straps on the tunic unpiped? They look to be M10/15s. I don't think this unofficial pin came out until 1916, so this is a pretty minty M10 tunic for such a date. He must have been saving it as a walking out dress tunic. Is the photo dated?

Chip

As always I am amazed by your superb eye for details Chip, yes, the straps do appear to be Vereinfacht pattern sans-piping. The photo is a large studio photo, not dated, but from a photographer in Regensburg which could narrow it down to Kgl. Bayer. 2. Chevaulegers-Regt. Taxis
III Bayerisches Armee Korps. See here>> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/New/chev0.htm

M-1910 2.Chevauleger piping would be crimson red on the straps, collar edges plastron edge, bottom hem, rear scallops and cuff (poppy red number "2" on the straps) and silver buttons. M-1910 7. Chevauleger piping would be white vs. crimson (and poppy red number "7" on the straps). IMO Tony has nailed it down pretty conclusively as the 2. Chevauleger.

Dave

Thanks Dave!

Crimson Red piping would not be recorded by the orthochromatic emulsion (a shameless plug for this discussion):

I'm not familiar enough with uniforms to say whether piping should be there or not, but it very well could be.

It's a truly splendid helmet and presentation.

Chas.

Mmm.....true, but the construction of the strap is recorded. The Vereinfacht straps are essentially the top and bottom of the M10 strap without the piping sandwiched between. Plus, you can see it is sewn to the shoulder seam, typical for a Vereinfacht strap, and not a slip-on as were the M10 straps. As Chip spotted, you can see it is a Vereinfacht strap, missing the crimson Piping for this unit as Dave indicated. I would love to find a Chevauleger Feldrock like this............

Tony,

There actually are several very nice examples of this tunic around. One of the regiments must have had the barracks looted, as I have seen at least three tunics in mint condition, all marked to the same unit. Who owns them now, is anybody's guess.

Chip

Excellent helmet Tony!! I examined one of these...a real beater which was up for sale at the MAX Show one time in PA. I do not have one either! Brian

Tony:

I know it's not an issued enlisted piece, but here is my M-1910 officer's waffenrock for the 4. Chevaulegers-Regt. Konig with M-1916 pattern shoulder boards. The piping is in poppy red.
