Feldmutze Warning

This is a Prussian Feldmutze dated 1917:

It has a linen liner and is well marked:

The problem is that it is a reproduction. I bought this from an advertisement that I saw in a Military Collectors magazine in the days before the internet. I must insert a disclaimer here:

Disclaimer: The company that reproduced these for sale NEVER advertised them as original. They were ALWAYS advertised as high quality reproductions suitable for collectors and re-enactors.

The reason that I am writing this is because they are now showing up and are being sold as originals. These are not the typical reproductions coming from Singapore, so I wanted to offer a warning. I saw one on Craigslist with Bavarian cockades that sold for $429.00. I saw another, same seller same place, with Prussian cockades sell for $289.00. I have seen them on Ebay, and I have now seen one at a gun show priced at $350.00. I do not know if it sold.

The markings are convincing, especially if you collect Hauben and are not that familiar with Mutzen:

The markings are always the same, except the hat size, and they are always located in the same position relative to one another. The stitching is done by machine. The red band and piping give off a faint glow under blacklight (newer reproductions glow like a brake light).

Be aware. They are out there and they are pretty good, especially if somebody buries one for a couple of weeks and throws it in the washer.

I put this warning in the Ebay section because I didn't want it in the open forum. I do not know if there could be any ramifications from a post like this. If the administrators want me to remove this I will be more than happy to do so.

Again, the company that originally sold these never indicated, in any way, that they were anything but reproductions.

I believe the markings are from Great War Militaria. Schiffer Fabrik also marked their goods with their own maker's name.

Yes, GWM put these out in the 80's, I believe. I bought one through a magazine ad just as a display piece. I kept it because it is a repro and not really worth anything. I did throw a couple of original cockades on it. When I started seeing these commonly being sold as originals I figured I would let some of the new guys know.

I wonder what the dealers selling these as originals tell the buyers GWM stands for?
