Feldwebel Bavarian Infantry Pickelhaube

So excited today. I just received in the mail a Pickelhaube I purchased from a German auction house. The write-up identified it as belonging to a Feldwebel in the Bavarian Infantry. The Hinterschirm needs a bit of re-stitching but otherwise it's in great shape.
An added bonus is that tucked into the band was a newspaper from the turbulent year 1920. The newspaper says something about the politics of our Feldwebel, since it's associated with the nationalist movement in post-war Germany.

Congratulations, that is an excellent piece. He must have been a very senior NCO because the helme is totally officer except for the wappen. The wappen itself is the older mod 1886 with extra vines and leaves. I believe, you now have helmets with both the mod 1896 and 86 wappen, excellent. That pink silk liner is rare from my experience as well. :thumb up:

nothing to comment here ,just saying that i a verry nice one

give it a nice place to look at
congrats

Oh, yes, I do have a very nice glass cabinet to show it off. Ikea has the perfect case at a bargain price.

Very nice helmet and the "Munich-Augsburg Evening Newspaper" is certainly a plus. I had a 1917 paper in a Prussian infantry officer's helmet. Good reading.

Karel, I thought all three crowns on the wappen had to be pierced for it to be an officer.?

Now, that got me looking! Here's a photo of my Bavarian:

But how about the stars on the spike base, the Perlring and the officer's kokarden then? As I understand it, a Feldwebel is an NCO and these guys couldn't wear a helmet exactly the same as an officer...
I have only one Bavarian officer's helmet with the 3 voided crowns and that's the one from Prince Alfons, but he was a General...

Nice haube :D And I agree that the differences between a NCO and officers helmet are sometimes subtle and confusing.

This topic is discussed in the following thread:

I agree Karel, the helme is totally officer in it's characteristics. My question was just about the wappen and the fact that only the large crown is pierced? Perhaps with Bavarians, this does not indicate non officer? My impression was that all crowns had to be pierced on the Bavarian wappen to make it a true officer helmet. James, you specialize in Bavarians, what is your opinion? My last Bavarian purchase, which was posted here is a vulcan fibre haube with M91 posts, flat chin scales, fluted cruciform spike with old style OR pearl ring, officer liner, OR kokarden and OR spike base brads. To me Ron's helmet (pictured) is a real Bavarian officer helmet...3 pierced crowns on the wappen.

Guy's I think we may have a difference in makers or some other kind of anomaly here....

I have 9 Bavarian Officer helmets, all for sure Officer helmets. 6 with only center crown voided, 3 others with all 3 crowns voided.

Have 2 Bavarian Officer Tschapkas, 1 with all 3 crowns voided and 1 with only center crown voided.

Interesting enough, the book "Die Helme der Koniglich Bayerischen Armee 1806-1918" which I consider the best reference out there on Bavarian helmets, show numerous Bavarian officer helmets with only center crown voided, and even more interesting numerous pictures of Bavarian Generals helmets with only center crown voided?

The Stubbs book also shows both types of wappen on Officer helmets.

Another interesting thing is on my OR Bavarian helmets, some have closed crown, some have center crown voided?

I think this is a great discussion, and have no doubt in my mind that both center crown voided and all three crowns voided are legit for Bavarian Officer helmets.

Again just my opinion.

Best

James

Thanks for all the input, fellows.
I get the impression that actual examples trump all.
:D
I'm happy with my anomaly!

Well, James, our Bavarian expert has answered the question....so we do have an officer helme here. That's cool and I have learned something once again. Thanks James.

:bravo:

If there were only more measurements in the book…
