Felt Ersatz

What are your thoughts on this one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-GERMAN-WW1-SAXON-ERSATZ-PICKELHAUBE-HELMET-REGIMENT-MARKED-106-/272298608113?hash=item3f664305f1:g:gMoAAOSwuzRXfS0D" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here's what I think:
The helmet dome is too tall, looks too rounded.
The Kammer Mark doesn't look correct.
I have always questioned serrated Saxon cockades, but I guess they really did exist.
The felt looks fuzzy.
However:
The felt appears to be the correct thickness.
The liner appears correct.
The Wappen looks to be stamped, not cast.

I can't make up my mind on this one.

John :-?

In my opinion yet another example of the insidious Brit copies made back in the 1970's. The Regt stamping is bogus...they never look like that. I have never seen an ersatz felt with a brown liner and as you say the felt is fuzzy. The fake filz tschakos we have seen, both Prussian and Saxon all had decent wappen but the interior and exterior tells the tale.

WOW. I had never thought about that. I could swear that I had seen good, original Filtz with un-dyed liners. I looked at mine --- black liners. You learn something everyday.

John

I need to edit this post. Filtz Ersatz did exist with brown and tan liners.
I still think this helmet is a copy, but that is not the definitive factor.

If brown liners on filz helmes exist, then show me one...post a picture of an original. I have never seen one in 30 yrs of collecting but, if there are examples out there, I would really like to see one. Natural liners (un dyed) on black tin kit helmets and grey M15's.....yes. and also on the steel feldgrau "spun" versions.

I cannot come up with a better example than this:
