Here's an interesting field cover on display from the old collections here at the museum where I'm working. It was donated back in the mid-1970's.
Originally had "169" painted on green. Felt "140" numbers were later applied with stitching over the original unit designation, with only the "0" remaining from the designation change. It's nice to see the soldier's ID label sewn in the back, which clearly shows the original "169" on it.
The spike area has a leather re-inforcement in it. A neat cover, obviously showing extensive field use from the condition it is in. I wish it could "talk" to tell of its history!
This cover was found lying next to a brass trimmed Prussian e.m. w/bullet hole damage to the spike which was also on display, and given by the same donor.
Interestingly the donor appears to have "collected" lots of different military items, from both WW1 & 2, and gave the items we have back in the 1970's.
