Filzhelms on eBay

Hello everyone.

Here are a few filzhelms I spotted in my travels, both from the same seller:

1) A nice, though worn, artillery helm:

2) An infantry helm:

The kugel on the arty unscrews. I don't recall seeing this on any filz. I want to see the threads. Boy I'm getting pendantic.

Thank you Joe, Otto,

Otto, can I ask you to point out some specific flaws, please. To my untrained eye, they don't look bad at all.

The only possible weak point I see is on the Infantry helmet, the liner looks too new. Joe has pointed out the de-mountable kugel on the artillery helmet, was that your cause for alarm?

Sorry, I am probably too trusting. Were I in the market I probably would have bought them both and ended up with two turkeys.

Cheers,

Laurie

Another theory thought.

on the Infantry helmet, the liner looks too new.

So if the collector is not 100% satisfied with the item's originality should you buy it? I say no. Rather than buy a questionable helmet I try to wait for a better deal. Now I am also known for buying non-standard stuff. So I talk out of two sides of my mouth but if I have originality doubts I say no. When you sell it you are stuck explaining it. When I was a beginning collector I was in a hurry. I bought what was there. I cannot explain the problem with my OYV dragoon so I have not tried to foist it on someone. Is it all original? I doubt it and it surely has been "played with".

Dear Laurie,
Before anything else I repeat again that I am not an expert, I still have a lot what to learn. My choice criterion is very different (I think that) of the other members here of the site. I let to take myself a lot for the intuition, besides seeking details that don't make sense for me.
Ok, let's go by parts.
In the helmet number 1, besides the pointed detail for Joe, some things don't please me. The first of them is the liner. I think he belonged to other helmet, I find him very " curried ", it doesn't combine with the rest of the helmet, with the shape of "recently left of the factory". I don't trust in announcements with pictures badly done and in little amount, without showing details, and with the flash contemplating in the shining parts, what stiller hinders a correct appreciation. My observation way is " anti academic " , but in spite of some few mistakes, it has been working satisfactorily for me.

In the helmet number 2, the same problem, the "brand new" shape, the liner "look", the flash problem...well, for me that's all I need...

Think about the Murphy's law: If some thing has chance of ends wrong, it will happen probably like this...

Cheers,
Otto

Thank you, Otto and Joe, for your frank answers. I suspect that my real problem at this stage is that my eye is untrained and I am just a bit too keen. Joe, you said it well:

When I was a beginning collector I was in a hurry.

On first examination, I am embarassed to admit that I did not see the new liner for looking at it and was blissfully unaware that an artillery filzhelm with a demountable kugel would be a rarity, if they ever existed.

Otto, you are dead right, when it comes to impulsive, uninformed buying Murphy is a major player.

Thank you, both, for an excellent lesson, which is the real value of this forum.

Cheers,

Laurie
