I have a foot artillery Prussian officers helmet. The only reason I know it is Foot Artillery is because Randy Trawnik described it as such. As a newbie, I don't know how to tell a regular artillery helmet from a foot artillery helmet. They both have the kugel on top. How can you tell one type from the other? Is there something on the wappen that makes the distinction? Thanks for the help.

Take a look at the chin scales. as a general rule, and I do mean general mounted troops had rounded chin scales. So Field artillery would have rounded chin scales like this Württemberg field artillery officer.
Foott troops in general, had straight-not rounded chin scales like this Prussian foot artillery.
Do you see a difference?
There was a big difference between mounted and not mounted. Almost at times like the artillery had two separate and distinct branches. strap differences also extended to enlisted troops, where the foot guS well they hang on easy ands had more leather chin straps. If you remember the recent picture of a guy with a steel helmet and chin scales. He was from the Field artillery.

No one is getting frustrated. I completely agree with you. Sometimes I just cannot tell. There is another method to see if they are straight or round that again works most of the time. In general the rosettes are different. Foot troops generally have round rosettes that fit the chin scales.
Mounted troops in general, had oval rosettes which conformed to the chin scales.
Do you have the book by Randy Trawnik? I think it is a teaching book, and you can learn a lot about various things in the English language. It is one of my favorites.

Yes, I have Randy's book and use it all the time. What a great resource. I have Vol 2 as well, plus other helmet books. The frustration is with me and what I am afraid may be seen as trivial questions on subjects you guys already know the answers to. I really hate to bother you with this stuff....again, the frustration is mine. Thanks for everything. This last set of photos helped a lot.

I don't think any questions are trivial. :silent: It is really bad when someone does not ask. And then they buy. I actually am afraid that people might see me as elitist when nothing could be further from the truth. I make mistakes, but have a lot of fun trying to figure things out. What might surprise you is that when you ask a question that you think is basic it forces people to look up things that they used to take for granted and sometimes find out something entirely new. We used to have a sticky on basic questions. Maybe we should stick it back up?! I just don't think that your line of questioning was trivial or basic . It just shared a lot.
