Greetings all.

Thought you might enjoy seeing this fairly clear Daguerreotype image of a French Infantry officer of roughly the Crimean War era. His rank is Captain, a company commander maybe, with his image taken perhaps prior to his departure for the seat of war. I had been in the market for a decent image of a French officer of this era, purchasing this example recently at a cowboy arts show in Albuquerque New Mexico. Just goes to show us we never know where things will show up sometimes.

In hand, the image measures roughly 75x95 mm and resides in its original Second Empire fitted oval case with a hanging ring on the reverse. He is shown wearing a single breasted dark blue wool frock coat, with a brocade dress sword belt with Liberte’ buckle on his waist. In his hand he is seen holding the grip of his 1845/55 foot officers sword. Placed on the photographers table next to him, is his dress shako, of a type which predates the universal pattern adopted in 1860.

All in all a decent uniform study of an officer from 150 years ago…glad he's staying with us for awhile, he doesn't eat or say much.

Cheers

Larmo
