What is the give-away here? The sweat-band is new which the seller also mentions in the description. Is the single center hole without studs incorrect (compared to this one http://www.pickelhaubes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2500&highlight=tschapka+felt)?

It seems difficult to identify fake felt without the liner (and with what might be original hardware?).

The lack of studs, as you mentioned, is probably not a good sign.
The mortarboard seems oddly shaped, too.
A very similar helmet--if not this exact same one--appeared on a militaria site know for its high-priced replicas of felt helmets.

Hi Robert and Brad,

Yes it's not easy to know if a felt tschapka is a good one or a fake. Some of these fakes, often made in England, are very well manufactured and look like some genuine old headgears... but there are some details. Especially the way to fix the top ("mortar board") with the shell of the helmet. This is the case of the tschapka actually for sale on eBay.de and it seems to come from the same copies maker than Michael one's. Let view this topic:

No regret for this one!

Thanks for the pointers. It seems that felt is just THE material for fakes. Too bad that collecting such helmets is nearly ruined through all the repros (even though I lack the cash anyway).
