FRESH TO MARKET

Wow, I missed a lot here. Sorry to have stirred the kettle with my comment... Especially to you, "Spiker"!

Well, for me, this auction was a total disaster. I was high bidder on this for a long time and on Thursday after talking over value with some other Pic's folk, thought I'd up my bid closer to what I thought it would be worth... So, I entered my absolute limit of $2,772 or 77 which was over the ending bid... Yup, OVER the ending bid. Something went wrong either on my end or theirs and when I thought the bid was entered it wasn't.
I don't like to 'babysit' auctions, because once I enter my very top bid, I let it ride (so I don't over spend). Imagine my surprise and disappointment when I saw it sell for less than I'd bid!! I really don't know what happened... but there are a few possible explanations. First, is that there was a glitch in the system, which I've NEVER encountered with ebay. Second, I entered the wrong numbers and didn't notice... also unlikely, but possible. Third, I was on lunch break and eating at the same time. The only other possibiltiy is that I pressed 'cancel' rather than 'bid'. Most probable.
Either way, on Saturday, I saw that the auction was still $400 below my top bid and didn't open the page (you know, the photo is on the sidebar with the top bid below it) and I didn't open my work email, which would have given me an outbid notice and caused me to re-enter my top bid, so figured I was good to go and if somebody bid more than $2,772 or 77 what ever I entered, then best to them (I thought that was still a good price??). Anyway, everything messed up and I can't really blame anybody but myself (although it would be nice to, but really, I dropped the ball big time).
So... still on the hunt for an infantry type that's better than the one I have! :)

Sorry to hear that you missed out on it Ron.

It was, and is a $3,500 to $4,500 helmet. Try finding one of these on a dealer website or at a major show for anything less than that price range.

Junk guard infantry helmets can sell for $2,000 to $2,400 on eBay partly because of the exchange rate with the weak dollar compared to the Euro.

Someone got a real bargain on this one.

I highly recommend using auctionsniper.com with a 7-second delay. It never fails me when I use it. I won't ever use eBay's proxy bid system.

All the Best,

Alan

Well, yes, I was told all of that and was hoping for a bargain, rather than a heartache or headache. Anyway, the winning bidder may have had a $3,500 bid entered (which I hope is the case), so I'd not have won anyway... but it was just REALLY REALLY FRUSTRATING! ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) Like most people here, I try to have fun with this hobby rather than disappointment and frustration.
My theory is that everything happens for a reason, so I'm wondering how this will all sift out given that philosophy. Things usually work out one way or another in the end. And... really, it is just a helmet, not a life or death type of thing.

i been reading this forum for a long time now and just had to join.

I think the seller was told because the person who told her knew they couldn't meet the end price so he was makin sure nobody else could get it cheaper.

I read this forum a lot. Ther'es a lot of envy on forums like this for collecting things. This one is no different.

hello and welcome
Nice you joined.
It would have been great to see your collection or hear you shearing your knowledge regarding pickelhaubes.
I would also sujest mod's to close thise threat, as the helmet it self is no longer discussed!
cheers

Yes, welcome to the forum, we'd love to see your helmets and get your input on things.

I really don't know what your implication is here, but if you're implying that I didn't have the money for the bid I thought I'd made, well, that's fine. It doesn't affect me at all. What does affect me is that 1) I made Spiker feel bad with my comment early in this thread and 2) that I screwed up my bid somehow. That the auction didn't turn out my way is just the way on line auctions can go, it's no big deal, just frustrating for a few days.
My assumption is that the winning bid went through fine and the winner purchased the helmet. If not, well, that's between the dealer and myself, really none of your business, but thanks for reminding me to check back with her.

So far no feedback on the deal :-k

Did you see this one she just listed?

No feedback on the deal thus far would be possible if the winning bid was from a European buyer, and they may not have received it yet.

Even if it was shipped to a USA buyer, not all buyers are quick to post feedback. Regardless of where the winning bidder resides, they may wish to remain anonymous by not posting feedback. That happens as well.

Or another explanation is that the winning bidder did not pay for the item. If you're a seller on eBay, that will happen to you sooner or later. It has happened to me before...

I wonder who the collection of military items belonged to in New Jersey, and what more may be to come.

Best Regards,

Alan

I wonder that too Alan; what else is there? We'll just have to wait and see. I was a bit disappointed in the Hessian helmet she posted last, but again, no biggie.
She said that the transaction went through fine. Many times when I bid, I contact the seller to indicate that I'm still interested in the helmet if the deal goes bad. I've had people do that when I sold on ebay and it was nice to know that the item could be sold without another auction, if the winner didn't pay.
