Garde Pioneer with Totenkopf

Here is a copy of a page sent to me
page 474 I don't know what publication that it is from
and I don't read German
but the article is about the Totenkopf patch on the arm
of the uniforms of the Garde Pioneer
I have in my collection the patch only for the enlisted man
I have seen a photo of an officers patch in silver wire before
I have heard of the officers helmet for the Garde pioneer
with small Totenkopf under the Garde star
Does any collector on this site own such a helmet ?
If you do please post photos of it
or just photos of a collection that contains one
The photo of the e m to parade shows the date of 1918 ?
when I expand the photo the arm patch seems to be
attached in a strange manner ?
The officer in the field blouse looks correct
Feedback please
Thanks

My mistake He is an NCO not an officer
The drawings are done by Paul Pietsch

Steve,

I believe in the studio portrait, the patch was pinned on by the photographer and not actually sewn on to his tunic. If you have the book “German Flamethrower Pioneers” you’ll see this in examples of other studio portraits.

The NCO photo below is actually sewn on for sure.

I had both the officers and enlisted patch at one time, but now only have the enlisted type. Yet another regret of selling a piece I wish I had kept!

Hi Steve,
Here is a photo of such a helmet.
Depicted in the book : Deutsche Offiziershelme aus der Keiserzeit , part 1, page 190 by Joachim Hilsenbeck.
As far as I know, from other collectors, there is and remains the discussion whether this helmet ever officially existed.

Sander ;
Thanks
That is pretty much what I thought
I wonder who owns that example ?
I will ask my friend Charles if he knows of such a helmet
and does he think that there it is the real deal
Looks like a small Totenkopf same as for I R 92 & H R 17
officers cloth hats .

As stated in the text from Steve, the helmet has been officially introduced on june 16, 1916. So there should be no doubt that it existed. But I think it's rare like a unicorn because it was introduced in 1916 and only for a very small group of soldiers. I wouldn't be surprised if the sample helmet is the only one in a private collection.

I was able to contact the collector that is the owner of the helmet
shown here .
He assured me that the example shown is 100 % correct
Knowing the collector for many years I have no doubts about it
