Here's an original Garde Reiter on ebay. A good comparison for all of the fakes out there.

Finding a good matching lion at no less than half the price it'll reach is the tricky part I guess...

Always hard to believe these helmets can sometimes go beyond the price of a Wrangler...

Yes, expensive... but how long ago did you see an original untouched one for sale? Ok, it's not an officers model, it's "only" the hard to find Unteroffizier mit Portepee version...
If you're looking for one... maybe it's time to bid...
Ron, the lion was only worn at parades, so most of the time these helmets were worn without the lion...

It's already beyond what I could bid... I'd have to sell my M37 Dodge QUICKLY to be able to play in this game! Well, I'm not complaining. My wife allowed me to buy TWO general's helmets (War Ministry type and A'la Suite) about four months apart a few years back, so I think I'm good. :)

Which model is it?

Personally, I'll pass as I'd rather wait for the Off. version including both the spike AND lion + the carrying case... 8) 8-) 8)

Yeah, right! No but seriously, what Model is this?

Not sure if it's still listed on his website, But Helmut Weitze, not exactly known for bargains, had an officer's Garde Reiter helmet, mit lion, at a price that was about $43,000.
As much as I would love to have it, I could buy a pretty nice collector car for that price.
Is this helmet really worth anything like $40k?

That's the fun of watching the auction... we'll see what it's worth. :) Anyhoo, I remember the one on Weitz, didn't it have the case, parade trichter, lion and spike along with the cover? I mean, that thing was beautiful! I guess as with everything, value is up to the purchaser and those of us who've been in this hobby for a while remember when parts helmets were $20 or less and near mint officer helmets were $300. The collectors before us, remember $50 GdK helmets, so it's all relative I think. I also remember muscle cars (Barracudas, GTO's and the like) selling for under $100, so again, all relative.

I hope he's got 2 of them as I need one for the office next to the pencil sharpener...

Hey Ron, how much does a good Time Machine sell for these days?

Indeed, nice helmet but way out of my league :D
Besides that I don't think my wife will ever allow me to spent a similar amount of money on a helmet.

Regards,

Edwin

Boy, Ron, I'm with you! I knew a WWI vet who had collected Pickelhaube before I met him starting right after the 'Great War' (he didn't have even one left at the time we met!) and he said that it was agreed within his group in Washington State never to sell a helmet to another collector (in the group) for more than $1 - $5 than the seller spent on it, depending on the helmet. He was the one who told me about the $50 GdK helmets and that most Pickelhaube went for between $2 to $5 with busted up ones for 50 cents or less. Of course, you could find them at garage sales for a quarter or ten cents, depending (and some people would just give them away if they found you were interested... that only happened to me once, but it was GREAT!). So, all in all, the value of a spiked helmet has gone up much more than the cost of living, inflation, etc.
Of course, that's good and bad. Good, because now they're not 'Junker' helmets (as my grandfather called them), or just garbage to be tossed in the basement or attic to rot, but have some value. Bad, because they often cost too darned much!
But, as of right now, that one on ebay is an absolute bargain in today's market. I wouldn't be surprised if the price doubled before the end of the auction, but then, who knows!

:D Ron

I guess this is why I recently bought a few Cold War era Soviet caps--one dating back to the Russian-Afghan war--for less than $40 a piece... These don't even come close to German headgear but you never know, one day my great grandchildren might tell similar stories...

I do not follow Karel. Why do you say that? Single silver overlay ring is correct for officers of Kürassier and Garde Reiter if you are talking about the Kokarde?

Yes, why do I say that? I guess it's still confusing, because in an article of Joe concerning Kurassier helmets, I read the following:
In the matter of cockades it does not appear as if there was an Unteroffiziere ohne portapee specific cockade for metal helmets. It appears as though it either had a silver ring denoting portapee or it did not. Cockades for these helmets were all 65 mm.
You can find it here: http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/UpgadeKurr.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Maybe my English isn't that good or maybe I didn't understand it well enough... But I believe you more then I believe myself, so I guess you must be right and I've learned something again...
Anyway, what I really meant was that it appears to be a beautifull helmet and these are really hard to find in good condition nowadays... with the result that they are indeed expensive.

Well, it's a good thing I didn't buy it then... 8-)

What year/model is this (pretty darn expensive) beauty?? The closest I would ever get to it are such photos I'm saving so I might as well name them properly. Is this a pre-war model?
