GDK Eagle EM

I took a chance on this one on eBay. It needs a little tinkering to flatten out the bends in the base, and one wing is a bit out of symmetry. Thoughts please?

Thanks,

Ron

With its four fixing screws, its height should be measured. If it's 13cm, it's an M1843; if it's 10cm, it's an M67. The four screws were cut and riveted, as the original four fixings were removed and replaced by the large central screw in 1870. Therefore, it's a crest eagle for an M67 "troop" GdC helmet, modified to an M70. The screws fixing the eagle to the base are damaged.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful! Does anyone have a photo of the under side of a base showing the 3 eagle to base retaining screws, in which the heads are broken off on mine? Also the central mounting wing nut? I know I have seen photos before, but I can’t find them using the search option.

Rob, thanks for not buying it back.

Thanks,

Ron

The main thing is to make or find a brass wing nut if possible. Several variations of period wing nuts exist, including wing nuts, ball nuts, finned nuts, etc.

Here are the 3 eagle to base retainers after I made the tops for them using the original threaded parts. I could have ground the solder down a bit smoother on the centers, but I was afraid that would weaken the joint. Also a wing nut I made from brass bar stock that resembles the original pictured above.
