General von Gayl????

I have commented a couple of times about poorly captioned or misidentified images before but in the context of fairly modern publications. This image is period to 1905 and was found on the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg site. A quick google search shows this and higher quality reproductions similarly captioned (falsely as it turns out). Little wonder that modern day researchers and enthusiasts have difficulty when the publishers of the time could not get it right.

The general in conversation with the Kaiser is shown as General (Georg) von Gayl. That raised a couple of issues for me.

1. He does not look like General von Gayl.
2. He is wearing a 1st class neck decoration of the order of the Prussian Crown. General von Gayl did not receive this until 20 August 1907 (when he was a retired officer living in Frankfurt a.M.).

Meet General der Infanterie Georg von Perbandt (1845-1906) , the then inspector general of foot artillery. The general retired on 5 April 1906 and died a few weeks later on 1 June 1906.
