German Feldmùtze on Russian Cossack

I am helping with the restauration of a Dutch fortress belonging to the Unesco world heretidge. During my work there, I discovered a great number of paintings, behind the chalk, made by dutch soldiers during the mobilisation period of WW1.

We found beautiful ladies with german feldmùtzen and many other paintings.
But the next painting is giving us a lot of questions.
We see a group of Russian Cossacks on horses. Clearly dressed as Cossacks.
The most left figure has , we think, a german feldmùtze. The artist has probably used a picture to make his artwork (2 x 3 meter in size).

I have several questions, I am hoping to get an answer on.

1 Is the Feldmùtze a german one, or is it something that also can be found in relation with cossacks.

2 Does somebody has a picture that could be the example that has been used by the artist around 1914

3 If it is german, is there someone who can tell me some more about this type. Or is it just an artist impression.

The pictures........

I can place a lot of pictures, but it can be found on several websites.

First has 3 pages, the last with some examples of the pictures.

The other one has more, but a little older pictures. Our fortress is allmost undisturbed and it is in the state as it is left since 1945. No water, no electricity, no gas, no working toilets, no telephone. Only spiders, rainwater, cold and rust. great place.

Wonderful work you are doing there Blaeu!

Perhaps, I can help you a little:

1 Is the Feldmùtze a german one, or is it something that also can be found in relation with cossacks.

The Russian Imperial forces did use a mutze like those of the German's. Shape, roundels and colors where slightly different.

2 Does somebody has a picture that could be the example that has been used by the artist around 1914

Try this link and you will see a very nice foto at the end.

I think the artist probably encountered the Cossacks on the Eastern Front but made a small mistake in regard to the roundel and made it round like the Prussian one instead of oblong like the Russian one.Hope this helps! Good Luck!

This was just a poor rendition of the Romanov Cocade on a peakless field cap.
