German Imperial Swords

James: Can you please scan ALL volumes and email to me?
Gus: So how many kidneys are you left with now? 8)

Hey Ron, that wan my thought, it would only take a day or two for James to scan these, it is not like he has a job or anything important to do. As for kedneys, I still have several, you can get two kedneys and a lot of bacon and ham from a pig:)

mmmm Bacon! (Homer Simpson)
Canadian maple-flavored bacon is the best, hey?!
And before I start another war with the Great White North, let me add that Wendy's has the best bacon-burger combos... :D

Hi Guys; Great information on Imperial swords. At a recent weapons collecters show I saw a sword with the markings- A.A. [did'nt get the rest of the #'s] also marked on the blade spine crown over ?. What unit would this be for? I have seen possibly "Aufklarungsabteilung" which translates to Reconnaissance, according to my sources. Please refresh my memory on the reconnaissance people! Price was right but I was in a hurry. Cheers, Dick

Jeff Noll's book on regimental markings says that "A.A." stands for "Abteilung Stab des Artillerie Regiment".

The percentage of existing issue swords vs private purchase swords seems to be heavily balanced in favor of the custom pieces. Nice issued pieces are fairly hard to find. I have only had four of them, in what seems to be a lifetime of looking. The M89 Kavalleriedegen (other than Prussian) are particularly tough to find.

For fun,

You should sell 1 to me... :)
By the way, what did the Bavarian Chevaulegers use in the late 19th century and throughout the war?
I saw the picture hereafter advertised as M1826 Chevaulegers although it rather looks like No.19 in the above chart (Bav. Art. Off. Sword) which is pretty confusing...

Here's another one which confuses me -- It is advertised as a Bav. NCO Heavy Cavalry Sabre this time and yet looks pretty close to No.19 in the above chart as well:

What was this sword?
It looks similar to the IOD for Prussia, but the emblem worked into the guard looks Bavarian.

What was this sword?

Infantrie-offizierdegen 1889 und Varianten by Peter Hartmann and Reiner Hermann shows two versions of this sword on pages 63 and 64. The sword is described as an Infantry Officer Model 89 with Bavarian Wappen. The authors state that the illustrated examples were made about 1910 but the pattern was never officially authorized for wear.
