Hey Guys,

What do you think of this ? I love wartime greys.

I do have a few questions that I have contacted the seller with. I intend to bid on it , if it does not go to high .

Don't mean to rain on your parade there "haube" but that is a rare beast so you had better be prepared to go big on it. There will be lots of watchers lying in wait to pounce at the last minute. They are just "hiding in the weeds" and not bidding until near the end. The pristine condition of the liner suggests to me that this was a War Bond helmet. We have numerous pics on the forum of the pyramid of captured hauben erected in NYC after the War, later, these were given as WB sales prizes.

I don't think it would make a difference. I check my favorite sellers and ebay at least ever few days for all kinds of things, even when I'm not buying. It's just fun to look. The best thing to do if you REALLY want something is to place your max bid and let it ride. Sometimes, even placing a minimum bid will win an item, but that's not usual with Pickelhaube.

Yes, Ron is on the money, posting will make no difference. We all monitor Ebay daily for new haubes and related stuff. You just have to establish a max bid in your mind, what you can afford without breaking the bank and go for it. You have to also accept, that many people have deeper pockets than you and can afford to pay more. It sucks but that is the way it is. There used to be a buyer on Ebay called "Banjo Picker" he was into Imperial photos and there was no way that you could outbid him, he always bought what he wanted. He just had the money and if he wanted it then, there was nothing to be done. All that the little guy could do, was bid up the price so that Picker had to pay more. How does the average guy out bid a millionaire?? There are very, very few bargains to be had on Ebay or any other net source. Our older collectors have posted about how back in the 1950's there was little information on pickelhauben. They had a hard time identifying helmets etc. This kept prices low, nobody cared, few collected and militaria values reflected wages of the time. In the 50's people were paid cents per hour not dollars. My first job in 1967 as a grocery packer, paid me $1.65 per hour. During the Depression, my father worked a 10 hr day for one dollar a day and he was damn lucky to have a job at 16

Actually bargains can be had on e-bay.

Usually during summer time during the week .

I had about a 10 year hiatous away from the hobby . About 10 years from Katina to now and I find prices are not fetching as high as they used to go.

Yes, I've found some bargains as well, but it's certainly a caviat emptor environment. Picked up two original tank manuals (TM's) for my library yesterday for about 1/4 of what they usually go for. So I've some fun reading coming my way.

He Guys,

Here is the fallow up after I have received the Bav Tschapta .

Overall it looks great but I do believe that the top is a reproduction. First of all it has an big x scratched onto the top that was painted over .
2nd--the paint is high gloss with no signs of wear what so ever. Truly remarkable
after 100 years .
3rd--the top metal skin roll over join is not finished . I have another original were you can barley see were the metal comes together.
4th--the metal top is very heavy about twice the weight of my original ( thicker gauge metal was used )
5-- the interior of the metal top is not painted . It should be because if not it would rust through .
6th-- the internal bayonet attachment ring has a couple of tiny globs of solder and was not finished to the outside body at the base . So there is a gap between the two the full circumference on the attachment. With German quality control this would never happen.

The leather dome and Bavarian plate are 100% . I have contacted the seller to see what we can do.

I worked things out with the seller and I am going to keep it .

It is still a semi rare piece even with the issue with the mortar board.

I have never even seen a picture of a wartime grey Bav Tschapta .
and now I own one.

Now I am on the hunt for a grey Wurt tschapta .

So this turned into a happy ending.

:D :D :D

Even so, a very rare piece despite the mortar board problem. If the seller took off money because of that, which he should have....you still got a good deal IMO.
