Sure. He is wearing a Kaiserliche Deutsche Feldpost cap. You can almost make out the two orange stripes on the cap band if you squint reeeeealy hard.

I love that foot gear obviously meant for some sub zero temps!! I guess that this would suggest the Eastern front?? I presume that this is a military postman due to the bayonet? Great foto Joe! Brian

Joe,

Could you please post a close-up of the knot on the bayonet? I will have to check my reference and see what the Feldpost members wore. Certainly not a company knot. I suppose that they had their own pattern.

Thanks,
Chip

What about a close up of his side arm, it appears to be a small frame revolver.

Hey Thanks Joe,
That has to be a small frame revolver, but which one? Could you lift the flap and give me a close up of the handgun? The holster does not look like a military issue as most of the period have a strap to close the flap, and this one has a hole in th eflap to ingage the stud. After looking through the 1911 ALFA catalogue, I was able to find a similar holster, and it could contain any one of a hundred revolvers, and a few autoloaders.

Joe,

Thanks for the effort to scan for the close-up. That knot must be unique to the Feldpost, as it is not an army type. Would love to have seen it in color. When I get home, I will look in Kraus (he loves the Feldpost) to see if he mentions the knot colors.

Here's the description of the Portepee. It was was made from gilt wire and blue silk. The bottom was "acorn shaped" like an army Portepee, but all gilt. The cap, stem, slider and strap were a mixture of gold and blue.
