Helmet cover Regiment "8" from WW1 US Officer

Hello,

Here's another item from the family of the WW1 Officer that I recently acquired the Jaeger zu Pferde helmet from. An Enlisted pattern field cover with a green #8.

I've included a couple of photos from the family of the 2-helmets & cover that the WW1 US Officer brought back from Europe. According to a letter, he purchased the two helmets from French soldiers in November or early December of 1918, after the Armistice.

Unfortunately I was not able to acquire the leather Prussian enlisted helmet. The Regiment markings inside the helmet Did Not Match the field cover. The helmet markings were discussed here in a different thread: http://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10846" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The leather Prussian enlisted helmet had incorrect curved/mounted troops chinscales on it that were also too big for the helmet shell size. The curved/mounted chinscales did not match the helmet Regiment markings, as the markings were for a foot soldier regiment. The helmet also had a well-worn incorrect Bavarian enlisted man's kokarde on it as well, which isn't shown in the photos.

Best Regards,

Alan

If the price was right
That is still well unit marked helmet
even with the faults
which might be corrected in time
the scale straps would have value
to a collector in need

Where you able to tell what regiment
the green 8 stood for ?
Thanks
Steve

Hi all,

I must say, I am not understandig this topic :?:

This cover, as the JzPf helmet you are presenting in another topic are both to sell now on ebay :-k

What I get from the topic ;
He bought the items direct from the family
of a U S Vet
then showed us on the site what he had bought
then he placed them on EBay for sale
He did not buy them to keep for his own collection
but for re-sale

It was never my intent to offend anyone here by posting photos of the recently acquired jaeger zu pferde helmet and the #8 field cover on this forum and having them also listed for sale on eBay. I am sincerely sorry if I offended anyone. I can only wish that I were independently wealthy and thus able to keep everything I have ever found for pickelhaubes. If I would have kept every helmet I ever acquired in my lifetime I would now have approximately 70+ pickelhaubes for a collection. Instead I have 24-helmets.

I've spent just over $5K on 4-Imperial German helmets from different sources, and a small Imperial German belt buckle collection purchased from a retired collector in just over the past 30-days. That's a lot of money for me. Being as it is that I am not independently wealthy, I can't keep everything. If I sell something and make a profit, it helps me to have less money tied up in the things I want the most to keep for my collection. I hope that makes sense to any who may have been put-off by seeing the two items posted here, and having them listed on eBay for sale.

If I am permitted to continue posting on here without offending anyone, I would like to show the 3-other helmets that I have recently acquired, ones that I would like to keep for my collection. (another 2nd Guard Uhlan Officer Tschapka with a scarce Musician's red parade plume + a J. Bambus & Co. felt helmet + another felt helmet acquired this very afternoon at a tag sale in the town where I live.)

Maybe I should have listed the two items for sale here first, to let members have a shot at things first with a fixed price? In retrospect I honestly and sincerely don't know what would have been best. :-k

Best Regards,

Alan

“Offended” is a too big a word ,I think ,confusing maybe.
They are still your latest finds ,and every post with such detailed picture is more than welcome .
If they are for sale ,just say so ,it’s just a matter of time before someone will see them on e-bay.
We all know it helps when a specialized forum has good things to say about the item.

Good luck with the sale.

Hello

A very impressive Uberzug with a deep history. Unfortunately, for most of them, it is unpossible to keep everything we find, we have to do choice...

As I see it the helmet and cover are yours to do with
as you please after you purchase them .
Unless you broke some rule of the PH.com site
that I am not aware of .
Let 's see what Brian says after he reads your post .
Steve

They are yours to do with what you please so
I have no problems with the way you did it or want to do it
As you say it you cant ceep it al
Is still great of you to share it here so we get to see them and what you do with it after that is entierley up to you
Good luck on the selling

Jonas

I have no problem with Alan's posting here and I don't see how any of us could. The main value for all of us, is that he is a great member and posts pictures for us of what he manages to find. He is a true treasure hunter and I congratulate him for that. If he had not been out there hunting, these items would have remained locked away and God knows what could have happened to them. We all know that in the past 100's of thousands...millions of militaria pieces have been destroyed, tossed out in the garbage, burned, no one cared. So, for my part I am glad that he posted here, gave us a chance to see good pictures and descriptions. I have never seen an uberzug from JR 8 for example. The leather helme has Regt markings...I would like to see them, not upside down so if needed we can get Joe to add them to our list. Alan, you found these treasures, thank you for posting and also thank you for putting them up for sale, so that we collectors have a chance to bid on them. If this helps add to your permanent collection then that is great. We all as collectors, sell off stuff to buy more rare or better quality pieces. :thumb up:

No worries Alan, you did nothing wrong.

Great to see the stuff you find and if you sell it, that is your choice.

Nothing to worry about my friend.

The ideal way to collect is to have the hobby pay for it's self. There is nothing wrong with finding an item and then passing it on to another collector to enjoy.

I think that most all of us have to do that.
I would not have the collection that I
have today unless I had sold things along
the way to raise money to buy new items
for the collection .
Steve

The most economical way to form a collection is to do what Al is doing......hunt for stuff and buy more cheaply from civilians. Then sell off what you don't want to fellow collectors and then use your profits to buy what you are collecting. James does this and I used to but have gotten away from it for now.

Hello

I won the auction and received this famous Uberzug. I thank Alan for the fast and quality shipping. I am very glad to have this Uberzug at home because ... it came back at home.

Indeed, there are no doubt that this Uberzug is from the bay IR 8 which was in Metz from 1871 to 1918. The letter of the vet mentions that the French soldier who sold it came from the german city of Metz in which the french Army had just entered on the 18th November 1918. Thanks to Alan, we know the helmet on which the Uberzug was. As Philippe explained it, the regimental marking can only be IR 98, whose name was “Metzer Infanterie Regiment” and has garrison too in Metz. This fact confirms that the Uberzug is from the bay IR 8.

Another clue is the "3" marking which is typical of bavarian war production Uberzug. I do not know the meaning, maybe a simplification with the size of the Uberzug ?

The barracks of the bay IR 8, named Bayern Kaserne, are still in place, a part is now a high school, the other still in the french army hands.

So it was very interesting for me to have possibility to make come back an Uberzug from a Metz unit in Metz !

Hello Francois,

I'm glad the you are the proud new owner of this helmet cover.

As Steve mentioned, it's good to see that the cover is now back at home with you, where the story of its life began. :thumb up:

Thanks once again for buying it from me, I appreciate it!

Best Regards,

Alan
