I'm still a tad confused..what exactly do I have?...From all the responses I gather this is somewhat uncommon. Is it worth the $70 I paid for the helmet and plate?

What you have is an anomaly. It is nothing anyone has any experience with. Often times you can tell by silence when some folks have nothing to add or just do not know. No one has any experience with this because no one has seen one. It seems to be original. It seems to be a guard eagle without the star that is trying to be a Grenadier Eagle -- I know of no other example like this. If it was a standard guard Eagle it would be worth more than the $70 you paid but this is the only one of its kind -- assuming it is original it is worth more.
