Helmet stand

I came up with a new way of making a nice looking helmet stand this weekend. This is for my sun helmets, Scottish feather bonnet and other type of headgear.

I had a four inch across heavy cardboard poster tube. I measured and cut to the desired length. Then I "borrowed" an unused pair of black nylon stockings from my wife. This was something like $10 for three pairs. I stretched the nylons over the tube, with two layers of nylons. I then used the typical white cap on the bottom. The fabric is thin enough that it doesn't bunch up at the cap, and the fabric is tight enough that it makes for a nice smooth line.

So I bought a 30 inch tube, I can make five six-inch stands, and that uses about one pair of nylons. Total cost to make 15 stands is less than $15!

Nylons could probably work with small coffee cans that Brian uses too. What I like about cardboard tubes is that they're light, they don't rust and they're cheap.

Hey Peter,
Great idea, at least until you wife goes to get dressed and looks for that special package of stockings that she set back for just such an event. Then the cost may be a bit higher.
